How do I stop Facebook photo posts from popping?

Whenever I click on a photo post from the notifications dropdown, the photo pops out towards me and I want to disable this feature. How do I do that?
Whenever I view Facebook on my desktop, I don't go through the newsfeed, but instead click the notifications button to see who's posted, and then click on individual posts that people have made. When the person has posted a photo and I click on the notification to view it, instead of viewing that specific photo as the person's post, like I would if they had posted text, the photo "pops" forward, dimming the background.
I hate this so much.
Is there any way to change that setting to remove the "pop" feature? It only happens the first time I click on the notification to view the photo. If I've viewed it once already, when I click on the notification again, it behaves like a text post.
Please tell me there's a way to make this stop. If it helps, I use Chrome 99% of the time and would be fine installing an extension to stop this, though if there's a way to change settings in Facebook instead, I'd prefer that.
Thanks.

The Social Fixer add-on also disables this, but there have been some issues with keeping it updated lately (apparently, FB is not friendly for developers). I have never found a setting in FB itself to control the behavior.
