Killing time in Frankfurt

I have several hours to kill today in Frankfurt (Main), Germany. Where should I go? What should I do?

Recommendations for great coffee and food are incredibly welcome. I'd be more than happy to spend the whole day in coffee shops and restaurants, I just don't know where to go. I really, really dislike Frankfurt as a city but maybe your recommendations can help me change my mind!

Limitations:

I would prefer to remain within a half hour walking distance of the Hauptbahnhof, though maybe I will go ahead and splurge on an S-Bahn or U-Bahn ticket if you suggest something amazing that requires one.

I don't want to go anywhere that requires putting your bag/day pack in a locker or cloak room, which might rule out the museums.

Depending on how much time you have, I'd take the train into the Rhein valley - Rüdesheim for example - and spend the day there. You can return to the airport without passing through Frankfurt again.

Frankfurt isnt all that great, especially in walking distance around the main station. A lot of shabby shops and some shady business going on (it is not dangerious though!). One of the few nice things are in fact the art museums but they will require you to leave your bag outside. The rhine promenade is nice but not in today's weather. If you do want to go, direct yourself to this area. Otherwise, I'd just find a cozy cafe and watch the bankers dash by.

Response by poster: Frankfurt is grim. I guess it doesn't help that my hostel is in the red light district, where the problem isn't the sex work. It's the homelessness and the drug addiction. I grew up in a big city but I've never seen anyone shoot heroin until this week. There's a first time for everything.

However, I had decent sushi for lunch, found a cafe with really good coffee, and am considering my dinner options before I head to the airport. I have to pick up my luggage from the hostel, which has limited my options for leaving the city.

We went to a number of places in alt-Sachsenhausen for Ebbelwoi, otherwise known as Apfelwein or sparkling hard cider. Look for a place with a green wreath over the door, indicating a fresh keg. This was 2005 or so, I wish I had a specific recommendation. You'd think it would be completely touristy, but most of the people around were German-speaking. Some lovely patios, too.

Response by poster: Marking the question as resolved because I'm no longer in Frankfurt. But updating on where I went in case someone stumbles across this in the future while working out what to do in Franfurt.

I had sushi for lunch at Bento Boutique.

Then I ended up at Kaffeewerk Espressionist.
