What movie was this? Subtitles edition

This one's for a friend, who's being driven mildly insane by not having a title for this movie. It's a foreign film, probably (but not definitely) Japanese, and it had subtitles. The two principal characters are two boys, one of whom goes to live with the family of the other. They're friends at first, including at school (a martial arts school?), but find themselves on opposite sides of war. One of them loses his hearing during the movie. By the end, the two characters reconcile. The final shot is of the now-deaf one on a beach.

Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War? Korean, not Japanese and I've only watched the first half of it, but the profile fits.

Could it be My Way?
It's also a Korean film. But it has most of the elements mentioned. Though, they are runners not into martial arts
