Why can't I edit file information in iTunes anymore?

Irritating iTunes problem.

I've been using iTunes to edit information on my music files for a long time without any problems. Recently, however, I'll edit a file (Get Info> Info) and as soon as I actually click on the file to play it, it reverts to its old information, erasing all my careful edits. What's going on? How do I fix it?

(I'd rather not use another program for editing file information.)

Could the file be write-protected?

Response by poster: No, I don't think so. It's not just happening to one file, it's happening to lots of new files after I add them to iTunes. I've been able to edit the problematic files permanently in WinAmp without difficulty.

What happens if you right-click on one of these and choose Convert ID3? iTunes doesn't support ID3V1 tags, for whatever reason.
