Recent photos hidden on Samsung Galaxy S4 during file search

I have a Galaxy S4 and I generally transfer pics from it to a Windows 8.1 PC via USB, connecting up the Samsung as an external hard drive, navigating down to the DCIM folder on the camera's external SD card, then dragging & dropping. Recently, all my photos more recent than Feb 2014 are not visible via Windows Explorer even though the camera itself shows that those photos are indeed stored in the same folder on the external SD card that has all the pre-Feb photos. What gives? Are they hidden form view somehow?

Look in /storage/sdcard0/DCIM/ from your pc.

Something changed between Android 4.1x and 4.2x. I believe it was a way to deal with the newer phones coming out that have an emulated SD card that is part of the internal phone storage vs the old fashioned physical SD card.

Did you get an over the air update in Feb?

Response by poster: Resolved. I updated to 4.4.2 following these instructions and then doubleclicked the device icon on my Windows PC, navigated to SD card->Camera->DCIM. No photos at all. Then I noticed the phone was showing a message saying I could connect via USB either as "Camera PTP" or "Media Device (MTP)". I chose Media Device; the USB driver went through a new setup process on the PC and, voila, I was able to navigate to the same folder, and it showed all the jpgs stored on the phone. Dragged and dropped.
