Sex Songs Sisguised as Food
August 22, 2005 2:29 PM   Subscribe

MusicFilter: I am looking for songs of any genre that use food as a metaphor for sex. The two songs that I could come up with are Mississippi John Hurt's Candyman and Van Halen's Ice Cream Man. Thanks so much.

J. Geils cover of the Marathon's song "Peanut Butter". Also, on the ice cream man vein (heh) Richard Thompson's "Hokey Pokey" is also known as the ice cream song. I'm sure I'll think of more.

A few songs off of Cibo Matto's Viva! La Woman come to mind. Especially "Artichoke". The whole album is about food and much of it can be somewhat sexual. Look here for lyrics.

I might come up with more later.

Breakfast in Bed by Loudon Wainwright [lyrics]
Hot Coffee by Humble Pie [lyrics]
Homemade Love by Journey [lyrics]
Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones [lyrics]
Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag by LL Cool J [lyrics]

There are some good lists of food songs here and here, I'm sure there are many more that are also about sex. With a few more suggestions for blues standards here.

"Bread and Butter" by the Newbeats:

I like bread and butter,
I like toast and jam,
That's what my baby feeds me,
I'm her loving man.

He likes bread and butter,
he likes toast and jam,
That's what his baby feeds him,
he's her loving man.

She don't cook mashed potatoes,
she don't cook T-bone steaks,
Don't feed me peanut butter,
she knows that I can't take.

He likes bread and butter,
he likes toast and jam,
That's what his baby feeds him,
he's her loving man.

Got home early one morning,
much to my surprise,
She was eating chicken and dumplings
with some other guy.

No more bread and butter,
no more toast and jam,
I found my baby eating
with some other man.

I see I wasn't the only one whose first thought was that damn Milkshake song.

Also, "Fruit" by The Lapse, which sounds sexy and includes the line "I like to taste you every single day." And if you don't mind German, "Die Banane" by Die Ärzte, which deals with blowjob imagery and has slurping noises.

Scratch my answer of "Stick Out Your Can, Here Comes the Garbage Man", which has absolutely nothing to do with food, and I don't know why I mentioned it.

Surely the obvious one is Marcy Playground's Sex and Candy Well, not really. In that song, candy really means candy.

"Spoonful" Charlie Patton --> Howlin' Wolf --> Cream
"Coffee Grinder Blues" by Jaybird Coleman
"Peaches" by the Ikettes, covered by many.
"Let My Peaches Be" by Papa Charlie's Boys / "Rollin' and Tumblin'" by Elmore James, covered by Eric Clapton / "Matchbox" by The Beatles et al. (all of those w. some variant of "if you dont' want none o' my peaches baby, please don't shake my tree")
"He's Just My Size" by Lillie Mae Kirkman (lots of talk about baking cakes and having biscuits rise--this one's a riot; let me know if you can't find it)
"My Stove's in Good Condition" by Lil Johnson

Willie Dixons "Back Door Man" (retracted earlier in the thread..and btw, Howlin Wolf performs a defining version of this ..) while not entirely a food metaphor, does contains the lines:

"When you come home you can eat, pork and beans"
"I eats mo' chicken, any man seen"
posted by The_Auditor at 5:51 PM on August 22, 2005

Iconomy, I'm not sure if "Garbage Man" would really be classed as a food song, but it was (somewhat) recently covered by the Reverend Billy C Wirtz on his album Songs of Faith and Inflammation.

There's also "Jelly Roll Gum Drop," from Frank Zappa's Cruising With Rubin and the Jets album.

Most of the others I know have already been mentioned.

Well, Garbage has a song called "Milk" that may fit into the category. The remixes are pretty hot, especially the ones that Massive Attack and Tricky got a hold of.

Poi Dog Pondering's "Pomegranate" goes: " I wanna suck your guava juice, get down on my knees and slip in your passion fruit." It gets sexier from there, with allusions to shoving grapes where the sun don't shine and the like. Healthy raw food fun!

"I Can Cook, Too" from On the Town. Not just food, but cooking, too. Oddball line: "my Crisco's as deep as a pool"

France Gall's recording of Serge Gainesbourg's "Les Sucettes" (the lollipops, I think) set tongues wagging in 1966. Because a lot of people didn't think it was really about lollipops.
