Where can I purchase furring strips in manhattan, nyc (preferably near union square)?
Response by poster: i checked homedepot.com ... they claim not to have any in the manhattan locations. i may drop by the 23rd st one just to make sure.

Try Prince Lumber on 15th Street or Metropolitan Lumber on Prince Street (confusing, I know!)

(Prince is usually cheaper but I think Metro is open later.)

Tulnoy Lumber is super cheap and will deliver for free within a day and most local hardware stores carry some 1x3 and 1x2 furring strips. Call around to the three nearest you on google maps.

Response by poster: turns out that the 23rd st home depot does have 1x2x6' and 1x3x6' boards, but they're not sold as furring strips

Just FYI 1x lumber and furring strips are different materials. Furring strips are cheap offgrade wood used mostly for providing structure on top of an existing wall for decorative finishes, it's a lower quality less structural wood. 1x is just wood (in the US typically pine) that's been planed down to 3/4" thick. You can actually feel a weight difference between the two (1x is heavier) and the furring strips are far more likely to have shearing, pitch pockets, warping, knots and to split and crack.
