do you have a sleep number bed? do you have a cat or two? come, young padawan, tell me of your experiences.

the bf and i currently have a bed that he bought well before we began dating, which was 9 years ago. as such, the bed is, shall we say, nearing the end of its functionally comfortable life (it's sorta going to crap, is what it is). i have back issues, and he and i like different firmnesses to our sleeping arrangements, so i have been looking at a sleep number bed.

being that this involves an air chamber system, and we have cats, i am understandably wary of spending mas bucks on something that could potentially be destroyed by yoshi and hanzo, and although i'm sure the engineers of said bed thought of these things, i thought i'd ask for some more personal experiences.

thanks!

I have a Sleep Number bed and a cat. The air chambers are pretty well enclosed in foam and padding. The only vulnerable part, I think, is the tubing that runs from the pump to the mattress. My cat has left it alone. If you are concerned, however, you could get a length of flexible pipe insulation and place it around the tubing for protection.

My cat does enjoy the top of the Sleep Number bed, and she prefers my sleep number to my husband's sleep number.

Do yoshi and hanzo (awesome names, fyi) have daggers for claws? I don't own a sleep numbre bed, but I have slept on one and I'm pretty sure there's at least and inch (if not a lot more) padding between the air chambers and the surface of the mattress. I cannot imagine a house cat being able to destroy one.

No worries about cats. Even if you don't have the pillow top there's still at least an inch of foam before you get to the air bladders, which are really tough multi-layer composites with a canvas shell. (Been sleeping on one for 15+ years with many fine cats.)

When asking about mine, and what my toddler could do to break it, I was assured by the saleswoman that the bellows were essentially indestructible. She claimed that you'd have to go so far as to drive a sharp broadsword into the middle of the bed to cause it to fail. In addition, she said that if I did manage to bust the bed, I should bring her a picture, because she's never seen it happen.

Almost a year later, and we're thoroughly enjoying the bed, and it's proven impervious to Citrus Jr.'s shenanigans.

(Protip: Don't buy your toddler a sharp broadsword. That'll help lower your risk.)

I've had a sleep number for an incalculable number of years. Let's call it a decade. Mine is not a pillow top.

I have lived with 2-3 cats consistently during that time period, including one who shredded the bed frame -- and I've had no issues with punctures. There is sufficient padding and the cats have never bothered the tubing.

We've had a Sleep Number bed for years along with two fully-clawed cats. As mentioned above there's a thick foam layer above the air bladder. No risk of puncture.

One thing I'd recommend - also get one of the waterproof mattress pads from Sleep Number. It has a sort of rubberized backing that keeps any moisture off the bed, and it's not some crinkly vinyl cheap thing. This is very helpful if you have hairball-prone kitties!

We really like the bed, btw. Had it for about 5 years and we're really happy with the purchase. Oh also, if you don't get a frame for the bed, SIS Covers makes good quality custom bed skirts that work with the adjustable models.

I have (had) a sleep number bed and really hated it. To the point where I ripped the air bags out and put a mattress inside (still hate it). YMMV of course, but the non-pillowtop ones are very very much like sleeping on an inflatable air bed. Make sure you know what you're getting into is all :)

Cats were a nonissue when we had them, though.

My friend had hers for a long time with two enormous cats and never had a puncture. Eventually one side started losing air, but they have no idea what caused it. The reason she got rid of it instead of trying to repair the air leak is because it was sustaining a large mold colony.

Be aware that there was a class action lawsuit against Sleep Number (since dismissed) for mold problems.

Please try one before you buy one. I've found that they're not much better than a glorified air mattress when it comes to comfort. But cats shouldn't be a problem.

Response by poster: excellent. good to know, both re: the mold and the air-mattressness of the product. we are at the beginning of this search for a bed, so i am considering many options. thanks, mefites!

My cat & sleepnumber owning friends got their moldy bed replaced for free, without much hassle.

Your cats are adorable! That is my main message
