Need to find software to make amazing art

I need to find some "visual DJ software" - complicated, tho, see below
This is a bit hard to describe, but I'll give it a go. Did anyone go to a Coldcut (Ninja Tune) concert in the early 2000s (they were on tour) where they used "Visual DJ" software?
If unclear, let me try to explain.
They'd rigged a laptop up to a bog-standard projector and the computer was running something very standard (Windows or Linx). As the audio portion of the set unspooled on the decks, the DJs would punch a key on the laptop that would pretty-near instantaneously display, on the projector, either a static image or a short animation. Net effect: a drumbeat became a droplet of water landing on a petal --a short movie launched from the laptop.
Apparently there was an online community that perpetuated this software, but I can't find them
Any ideas?

Response by poster: I guess I have to buy it. But thanks for the tip!

Also have a look at Jitter, the graphical portion of the Max/MSP suite.
