Do you remember a color-changing polar bear?

Children's book from the 80s where a polar bear changes colors.... I think?
This has been bugging me for ages. I loved this picture book that I had in the mid-80s. I don't remember anything about the story but the illustrations were really cool. There was a white polar bear and all the other colors were really dark and jewel-toned. I feel like maybe the polar bear would swim in the dark blue water and then his fur would turn blue or something? There were lots of other animals in the book. I hope this is ringing a bell for someone. Most likely a book purchased through Scholastic book club or one of those types of things. I know it was more of a landscape than portrait orientation and I've looked through the first several pages of Google images on children's book polar bear to no avail.

Perhaps The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle? If I remember correctly (it's been a while), the story follows a chameleon at a zoo who tries to take on characteristics of all the animals he sees. I believe one of the animals is a polar bear. There is color-changing involved.
