Compressing AIFF files

I'm recording Skype calls using Audio Hijack, and finding that the resulting AIFF files are pretty big and hard to send. What's the easiest way to compress them (to where they're still good listening quality), either via iTunes or RealPlayer or some other app?

If you go into Audio Hijack's panel for the Skype session, you can choose the file format. "For internet distribution (high)" is 128kbit MP3; much smaller than AIFF. For converting existing files, Max is your drag and drop friend.

Also check out Audacity for converting existing files.

I haven't checked this in a while, but iTunes used to be able to convert files within its own library from AIFF to MP3.

iTunes can do this. Just set your file type preferences and then you can control click and select "create aac version" or mp3 or whatever.

iTunes will do this. It might also be useful to know that Skype Recorrer [costs about $20 if I recall correctly] makes decent recordings and then you stay all in one app. We use it for podcast recordings and an hour+ of us talking takes up maybe 20-40MB. I'm not sure what's too large for you, but I've liked how useful it's been.

Right click on the track in itunes and "Create MP3 version" should be an option.

I would not want to bring it into iTunes for fear of cluttering my obsessive-compulsively managed library.

I like an app called XLD for converting audio. Interface is a bit sparse and unconventional, but it seems to work well and is pleasingly configurable.

Re: iTunes clutter:

Create mp3 in iTunes. Drag file to desktop (creates a copy there). delete from iTunes library, moving to trash. done.
