Answer cell phone without opening?

I have an LG 6000 cell phone, and I want to be able to answer it while riding on my bicycle, but not have to fumble to open it.
I have an earpiece which I will use, with the phone in a jersey pocket. Looking through the menus on the phone, there is something called "auto answer". But when I've tried to use it, it seems to automatically send the caller to voice mail. There's also something that is essentially "press any button to answer". But that does not include the buttons on the side of the phone - which would be ideal. Any thoughts?
Reading the manual is little help. And my weak google-fu has revealed nothing - searching for cell phone hacks, LG 6000, auto answer, etc.

But I tried that the other day - had my brother call me, after I had set the phone to "Auto Answer, 1 Ring". I had the hands-free connected, but it never rang.
Interesting thing, though... With the hands-free in, I can hear something (kind of a low level hiss) right before a call comes in. Then the phone rings. But when I set it to auto answer and my brother called, I heard the hiss - but it never "auto answered". I'll keep experimenting.

ObscureReferenceMan: I have this phone too. Are you sure your service didn't get momentarily dropped when your brother called? I think it's worth trying again, because that's not how it is supposed to work.

Does your headset have a button on it for answering calls? If not, here's one that does, though you should be able to buy one anywhere. Though auto-answer should work and is designed for people like you.

Response by poster: Thanks for the link, cillit. I was actually thinking that was the way I'd have to go. But no. As it turns out, the problem was entirely mine. I tested it again, and it worked. I gues I'm just a dope.

I suggest giving it a try on your own. Set it up, then call yourself from a land line.
