Is this a free call?
I'm in the US calling someone else who has a US phone number, but this person is currently in India. Is this treated like a normal intra-US call, or not? I have just the basic Verizon calling plan and don't want to incur extra charges. Prefer to use phone, but can zoom if I must!
Cell Phones: The Dirty Details
Hi, AskMe. :)
I'm switching to a new phone provider today, though porting my old number. I'm realizing I know very little about the way cell phones operate, and I got curious. I remember seeing a previous AskMe post mentioning text messages, but I'd love a broader perspective. [more inside]
New Smartphone Recommendations?
I have an ancient OnePlus One that I've limped along with for maybe 5 years now. Although the battery life is shit and the interface annoys me, I have avoided buying a new one because I didn't want to spend the money, But now I *must* buy a new phone because my carrier, T-mobile (and, I gather, other carriers) will not support it after the end of this month. Phone videos into Home movies
How do you get phone videos to be like old school home movies? I converted old 8mm film and old camcorder tapes into DVDs we can enjoy on TV or a computer. Once we started using phones to video things, we have lots of disconnected short videos on various phones. How are people converting/saving the files these days for watching them as if it was a continuous film? Hoping for an easy process and software recommendations.
Is there any way to get AT&T or Verizon to cover my neighborhood?
Right now, only T-Mobile and Sprint work in my neighborhood. I live in Los Angeles, so one would think AT&T and Verizon would work everywhere. They work in more places than T-Mobile and Sprint, which is why I'd love to switch. Is there any way to get said cell phone giants to cover my neighborhood (not just my house), or would it be a quixotic undertaking?

Looking For Slim iPhone 8 Case To Protect Screen And Back
I hate bulky cell phone cases, but I am sick of dropping my iPhone and cracking it. I am looking for a case for someone that hates cases. I want something that is extremely low profile, muted color (black or grey), something that will protect the back and the front while still having good access to the buttons etc. [more inside]
How to remove oneself from AT&T account?
Friend is currently AT&T on a family plan, and wants to get off of the plan onto his own, or with new company, but is unable to because the account holder holds the access pin that he doesn't know. He could just walk away from the account and start new somewhere with a new number but he has a lot tied to his number and would like to keep that same number at ant cost. Is there anyway to do this without the account holder giving the permission/access code? Can he go to a different carrier? It just seems crazy to me that he is locked into a contract, he pays for, that he can't find anyway to get off of whole keeping the same number? Thank you for advice!
How do I hands-free phone, esp. Android
On Friday, a Maine law will go into effect prohibiting using/ touching a mobile while driving. I love using GoogleMaps/ Driving/ GPS. I listen to podcasts and music stored on my phone. On long highway drives, I occasionally make calls. Android, older car with audio jack, no bluetooth. [more inside]

Best dual-SIM phone under $400USD
Can anyone recommend a dual-SIM phone which would work in the US and Europe and has a decent camera and should last 2 years at least? I'd prefer something that isn't a phablet...one-handed operation is a good thing, as is fitting into a pocket. My original budget was $200, but under $300 is preferred. Or should I bite the bullet and get the used Galaxy s9 for $400? (Background and details in "extended explanation") [more inside]

My phone is auto-answering spam calls. Please help!
I got a new Pixel 2 this summer (Android 9), and have TrueCaller installed to block spam. I set both the native phone settings and/or TrueCaller to block calls from my area code, which is where a) I no longer live, and b) most of my spam calls come from. Somehow, the phone now answers up those (and only those!) calls on its own. I know I need to not answer those calls, but how? [more inside]

How to legitimize phone number with organization?
My wife is doing some volunteer work, and she would like to be able to make calls on her personal cell phone so that her ID shows her from the organization she is working with. It seems that there should be built-in protections against spoofing, but is there a way for her to do something like this legitimately to associate her with the organization she has been authorized to call from? The orgainization is out of state, and one step closer seems to be to get a google number in the same area code.
What phone do I want? Android, Verizon, not the Galaxy
My Christmas present was a new phone, which I was supposed to pick out before Christmas, and I still haven't gotten around to it! I use Android, on Verizon, and I don't want a tip-top of the line phone, and it MUST be sturdy (or well-warrantied). What do you suggest? [more inside]

I want a wotsit that tells me when my mobile phone rings. Nothing else.
I solved my chronic procrastination problem (hooray!) by simply putting my mobile six feet away in a bag while I'm working. I would like, therefore, a gadget that quietly dings or buzzes when my phone rings. It doesn't need to be wearable, show the caller's name or count my steps or track my sleep. However, all I'm finding is poorly reviewed junk, or expensive smartwatches. I have an iPhone 6s if that matters. Any recommendations? [more inside]

Cell phone: cheap, simple, and maybe international?
I'm overwhelmed by cell phone and plan options! Seeking something that is... Under-$20/month, no particular need for a smartphone or data service. In fact, just voice and text would probably be preferable. If it can take SIM cards and work outside the US, that could be useful - otherwise, a month-to-month plan would be best, since we'll probably be traveling in the near future.

Tracing a Genetic Inheritance?
A recent blood test of my Caucasian mother revealed Sickle Cell Trait yet nowhere in her genealogical history going back many generations is there anyone from an ethnic group where this is more commonly found (African-Americans, Hispanics, South Asians, Middle East, southern Europe). I'm a student of my family genealogy and, while concerned about the medical issues, am nonetheless thrilled to know that my family is a bit more diverse than anyone realized. Some obvious questions arise, however... [more inside]

Burner Phones
Cheap and disposable cell phones, what TV detective shows love to call "burner phones" are always shown being thown away in trash cans. But if they are only used once, what happens to them? What can I do with a mobile phone with a busted sim slot?
