One night in Milan

Where should my girlfriend and I stay in Milano for one night? For cheap. Hostel or hostel-finder recommendations?

We have an overnight stopover in Milano on the way to Sicily. We were planning on staying with a friend's brother, but he had to back out of hosting us as he's moving to South America on short notice :)

I found this thread on AskMeFi: Cheap Hotels in Venice and Milan, which recommends laterooms.com and venere.com. Any specific hostel recommendations from MeFites would be ace.

To be honest, I would prefer staying at a private residence – paying for it. Meeting the locals is always interesting, more personal, and you see the truth of the place much more clearly. Any MeFites up for hosting a computer scientist and a flutist?

I'm also checking CouchSurfing.

Thanks for any advice!

Best answer: I always use HostelWorld as a research tool -- not always for booking. (Some hostels only book through HW.)

Pro tip: even if HW shows a hostel as sold out, call the place. Often times places give HW a block of rooms to sell, and when those are all gone it looks like they're sold out, but in reality they have plenty of rooms.

You may also want to browse around Milan's craigslist site, particularly the housing section.

Good on you for trying CouchSurfing. It's great! Also Check out the (older, smaller) Hospitality Club and Global Freeloaders.

Best answer: I've been intrigued by airbnb lately. I've never used it, but it sounds like what you're looking for - renting rooms or private residences for a small fee. And it looks like they have 58 available places in Milano.

Response by poster: Wow, great answers. Thank you!

Ha ... AirBNB is an excellent idea. Good implementation too - Links to the Facebook user system ; This is one of the strongest cases for Facebook apps I've seen so far. I think I'll actually spend $50 on on seeing if it's for real.

Response by poster: Yeah, I especially like AirBNB in this circumstance as it's way too short of a stay to properly live up to the CouchSurfing spirit. We would be arriving after midnight and going out early - I'm sure some hosts wouln't mind, but some would certainly be miffed. Seems more advantageous in this case to have everything directly and explicitly for-pay. Kewl!
