What is the cost of living for a Masters student in Amsterdam?

What is a realistic estimate of living expenses for a money conscious international Masters student in Amsterdam who wants to live on the cheap, but also be able to have a good time?
I am from the UK, hoping to start my post graduate degree in September at the University of Amsterdam. Excluding rent, how much will I end up spending a month living in the city?
This includes basic things like food (hoping to shop wisely and from markets where I can to save money), but also including the cost of living in Amsterdam. I love the city, and want to be able to have that coffee at one of my favourite cafes, go somewhere with new friends, visit local places, and this all be accounted for in my budget. Obviously I don't plan to have any large expenses, but want to be able to afford small activities without feeling guilt.
How much do you think I will need to set aside a month?

You could probably get by on 5 euros a day ... but it wouldn't be much fun.
I would be looking at about €500/month. Which was slightly more than I was living on 6 years ago as an international masters student in Amsterdam ... which was comfortable, but not too extravagant.
