Help us find these horse books!

Asking a question for the lady: Help us find these books! They are a series of horse-themed books for young girls, from the 1980's...
Apparently, they were all based on some ranch, they were sort of short...
The first book had some girl find this poor, old horse that was covered in mud... so she cleaned it up and fed it and washed the mud off, and lo and behold! It was exactly the color and model of horse she wanted!!
There was some bad girl...her rival/antagonist...named Whitney, who had black hair and rode a black horse (of course, of course).
The main character competes against the dastardly Whitney in horse jumping with her new horse that nobody thinks will win, but naturally...she wins.
The series apparently goes on from there.
Any idea?

Response by poster: Hmm. A good guess, but those don't appear to be them. =/ Thanks!

Somebody's Horse by Dorothy Nafus Morrison? I can't remember if that was really part of a series, though.

I remember Summer Pony and can say with assurance that it isn't the book the OP had in mind.
