King [something] from Hawaii?

Please help me find the name for this Hawaiian singer (I think), or maybe he's just a musician. He's no longer alive (I think). His name is King .... something? And apparently he had a big influence on Israel Kamakawiwo-ole.
Extra credit for suggestions as to which album/collection does his work the most justice.

Oh, and if you like modern music coming out of the Pacific Islands, I highly recommend any of the albums from Te Vaka. Amazing stuff.

King Bennie Nawahi sounds great but he's not who I was looking for ... which leads me to believe that my initial assumptions were incorrect.
