Alternatives to Battlefield 2142 for multiplayer?
I've been playing BF2142 for about six months now, and enjoy it very much, but am having trouble finding populated west coast servers (i.e., low ping) playing high-pop maps. Any 64 player map is good, and it's the high number of players that I enjoy.
Unfortunately, Battlefield 3 won't be out for at least a year, most likely. What current games offer awesome, high pop multiplayer battles, especially ones with good squad and objective mechanics, where the bugs have been worked out? From Penny Arcade's acerbic comics on Modern Warfare 2, it sounds like their multiplayer mode needs a lot of tweaking before it achieves balance and lack of glitchy play.

Tribes 2 is now free! It's by far my favorite multiplayer FPS. If you haven't tried it yet, you should!

Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 1943 will both released on PC soon. I believe the Bad Company 2 demo will be out the 28th of this month.

I still play Battlefield 2, and find plenty of populated servers. Plus you can get it on steam now....

minor addition, I heard that 2142 is coming to steam so that might up the player base.

Bad Company had pretty traditional Battlefield gameplay and might be worth a shot if you have a console. I enjoyed the demo and it felt pretty much exactly like my memories of previous Battlefield games.
DICE also remade Battlefield 1942 as an XBLA game. Again, if you've got a 360, it's a pretty faithful recreation, although they did simplify the class system some. That's still getting quite a bit of play, and probably has a lot of what you're looking for, although I don't think it goes up to 64 players.
On the horizon, there's Sony's MAG and Battlefield 3, both of which look right up your alley.
Depending on your level of patience with high-realism games, the Operation Flashpoint-descended games ARMA II and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising both have some of the squad/objective/scale stuff you're interested in. They're both riddled with bugs and various other debilitating problems, but they're very ambitious and interesting games. You might be able to get over their failings because of their ambition.
Sorry for not linking better, but I'm feeling lazy and none of these games are difficult to find. Have fun!
