Outlook 2007 appointment won't take a reminder

When I set an Outlook 2007 all-day event (appointment) to recurring, it loses its reminder.
I have tried /resetfolders and /cleanreminders switches as recommended on several websites.
Microsoft Office 2007 running on Windows XP SP3.
This problem seems to exist only for the all-day event type of appointment, such as a birthday. I have tried this troubleshooting: I set up a non-recurring appointment and set a reminder. That works.
Then when I make it recurring – weekly or annually, it doesn’t matter – the reminder disappears.
When I add the recurrence, I can actually see the reminder disappear from the Reminder Window when I save the appointment.
If I remove the recurrence, the reminder doesn’t come back – it seems to be gone forever.
This seems to be a relatively common problem, but I've yet to see a website where the problem-person actually says it has been solved (if the /resetfolders and /cleanreminders switches don't work).
