how to watch bbc iplayer outside of the uk ?

genuine uk resident and er... licence payer here - im in the us for three months so would want to watch some stuff from home but it wont let me even though i am incredibly legally entitled to watch - anyone who can lend a hand ?

You would need to pay for a UK-based VPN, or have something running back home that allows you to tunnel through and access the site as if you have a UK IP address. Or take advantage of the torrent trackers that offer British television. That's just how things are, and that's how they'll stay: the cost of 'expat access' can't be justified under the current remit.

Me again. I just found this - which is advertising what you are looking for - for the same reason (BBC).

I guess it all depends on if you're willing to pay to play.

You could try using iPlayer Downloader through a UK proxy. (I've done this from France a couple of times, and it worked much better than spoofing my location and streaming, which always seems to result in glitchy playback. Plus you get to keep the file.)
