Does any one know of a rental company in the US that will rent a me a 20year old a campervan? All the sites I find seem to stipulate the driver must be at least 21.

You're going to have much better luck with tiny, local rental agencies than with large, national ones, so get off the Internet (I can't believe I just said that) and crack open the yellow pages.

Also, while some rental companies have company-wide age policies, most rental companies' age restrictions vary from state to state. Make sure you're looking at information specifically for the state you'll be renting in, and possibly for the states you'll br driving through.

In either case, you're almost certainly going to be hit with a surcharge for being underage. It varies between companies and states, but can be as high as $50 a day.

Really? 21?
Most rental agencies require you to be 25, actually.

Most places will let you rent as a 21 year old with a surcharge.
A place that lets under 21 year olds rent though, is really hard to find.

will rent you a 20 year old campervan? oh. wait. Yea, I could never rent big equipment before 25 either. Only thing I could rent was a sub-compact car.

Why would you want an old camper?

jesirose, I think he means "to rent a 20 year old, a campervan"

Check with places like Rent-A-Wreck - they will have older vehicles (and possibly larger vehicles, like a campervan) and might be a bit more lenient on age as long as you are fully insured.

Interestingly (and a little off topic), U-Haul seems to have no problems renting trucks to people as young as 18. So you can rent a 24 foot diesel truck, but not a 100 horsepower subcompact that you're likely to do a lot less damage in.

In any case, U-Haul rents full-size vans which may be useful, depending on your need. I think they only do in-town rentals for them, though.

In town rentals just mean you have to return it to the same depot. I've rented U-Haul trailers, hauled them 1200 kilometres out of town and back with no trouble. They didn't even sweat it when they had to come and replace a tire 400 kilometres from the depot.

I'm in a similar, but less restrictive situation - want to rent a Huge RV but we are 21-22 years of age, so I'll be following these answers.

Are you married? Traveling with a couple who is?

Usually they are more lenient if you are - somehow companies seem to think that marriage makes young people more responsible.
