I have not once ever heard of something like this, despite being both a long-time resident of Japan and a considerable pervert.
That is not to say it doesn't exist, but that if it does, it is extremely, extremely rare. I would wager that a practice that uncommon would not be something that gets brought up in conversation in america.

I think what you're describing is Coprophilia. It is also referred to (when practiced in Japan) as Japscat. Clinical study on it here. Googling "japscat" to find more info leads me down a sordid path. Proceed with caution.

Wow, what a great question to start my day. Allthough I share the same obsessions as nightchrome, I have never heard of a practice you mentioned. The closest thing I ever came across something like this, was kopi luwak. I ordered a cup, which set me back about $12. The taste was different, but not exceptional. Do you know if the ingredients you mentioned need to be cooked or are you supposed to wolf them down sashimi style?

Actually, coprophilia is the fetish, but the act itself is coprophagy.

I can't tell you flat-out that nobody does this, but it sure sounds like it might be an urban legend. People will believe all sorts of twisted things if you stick "in Japan" on the end. Really, it sounds like just another one of the fictional sex acts (...the Hot Carl, the Cleveland Steamer...) that kids use to gross each other out.

So what ARE a Hot Carls and Cleveland Steamers supposed to be? Are they related to Trouser Trumpets?

davy: "So what ARE a Hot Carls and Cleveland Steamers supposed to be? Are they related to Trouser Trumpets?"

As they have been described to me:

A "Cleveland Steamer" is when the steamie puts saran-wrap over his/her face and the steamer unleashes on said face.

A variation on the Cleveland Steamer is called "Eggs, Danny Thomas Style" and involves a glass coffee table and willing participants. That's as far as I can go with this.

The "Hot Karl", I've been told, is similar but involves other body parts.

Come on, this has to be a joke, doesn't it? Like a Bonzai Kitten sort of thing?

If not, I'm worried about people.

Tragically, no. Not only is it real, but there are quite a few people willing to pay incredibly high prices for it. Most expensive coffee in the world, baby.

Also, I've never heard of this strangeness either. Put my vote in with the urban legend camp.

It's not. Stephen Fry gave it to Prince Charles as a gift.

1. Tell your friend that if he or she pantomimes the act, that'll do just fine -- no need to worry about asking for it by name.

2. I want to thank the person who introduced the subject of Cleveland Steamers and Hot Carls -- though not for casting doubt on their authenticity -- since their mere mention made me giggle for about 10 minutes.

3. As to what Cleveland Steamers and Hot Carls are, I would dispute the definitions offered thus far. A guide as to the legitimate debate about their meanings can be found at the Urban Dictionary, I have no doubt. Again, this difference of views should not be taken as casting doubt on their authenticity.
