What to do in NYC?

I will spend a week on NYC in October, it will be my second time there. Now that I have seen the major tourist attractions, I am looking for alternative things to do. Do you know something about interesting workshops where I can register?

I'm interested in arts & literature in general (specially on writing), but I do not have any special requirements, just looking for cool thinks to do, something like: creative writing, cooking, photography, or whatever…

Last year, I went to Vienna, and wondering around the city at midnight I came upon this place, it was the ground level of a building, all the doors were open and I heard people laughing. When I approached and picked inside, I saw this immense kitchen, they where having a cooking workshop, and apparently a lot of fun. I found it very interesting that people would gather that late in the night in a week day for a cooking workshop.

That's the kind of spirit that I'm looking for.

The 92nd St. Y is a good place to start.

Your trip wouldn't happen to include October 6, 7, or 8th, would it?

Not sure how many late-night cooking seminars we do in New York.

But here at MetaFilter, you might want to check out this.
