How long before my backlight goes out?

The backlight on my 5-year-old laptop screen has just started to get dimmer and pinkish in the corners. How long do I have before it goes completely out? Days? Weeks? At any moment?

Soon.
Just--- soon.
My beloved 6- year-old Powerbook started to do that same thing last month, and within a week it went black.
I'm told it'll cost $350 USD to replace the back light if I send it to an authorized Apple repair place.
I'm seriously thinking of replacing it myself (there are many DIY sites), but then again I might just buy an iPhone 3g and call it a day.
Thank the Gods I've a desktop backup.
Your machine will Kevork just when you can't have it happen.
Act now.

Definitely check out http://www.ifixit.com for a replacement backlight and installation instructions.

Hard to know, but I would operate as if it's going to go out at any moment. Also realize that you'll still be able to plug your laptop into an external monitor, so you won't completely lose access to the laptop if and when the display does go out.

Response by poster: To answer my own question, in my case it turned out to be about 4 hours.
