PD and Ubuntu. Help me make them work together.

Why is PureData so slow on Ubuntu?
I tried PureData on Ubuntu 7.04, and it ran super slow. I gave up and just used it with Windows. I installed Ubuntu 7.10 and have the same problem with PD. More specifically, anything I try to do in PD (open a file, put an object, etc.) takes about a minute and a half to actually manifest. I'd appreciate some advice to get PD working on Ubuntu. When answering, please assume I don't know a hell of a lot about either Ubuntu or PD.
There's also some mailing lists and various other forums as well. PD has a great user community, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting a good answer if the above doesn't work.
