I'm thinking of dressing as Lucy Van Pelt for Halloween this year, but I'm not sure how to go about finding a costume authentic-looking enough to be recognizable, as opposed to just being some girl with black flippy hair and a blue dress. Also, I can't sew. Any ideas?

Carry a football, and ask people if they've seen Charlie Brown.

Damn, itchy finger. I meant do that if you have the flippy black hair and the dress already.

how about a little sign over you saying "psychiatric help - 5 cents - the doctor is in"?

also, it's not just a blue dress -- it has to have a puffy sleeve and poufy bottom, and white bobby socks with saddle shoes. there's definitely a lot of material to work on.

oh - this might interest you even though it's not directly related. i read this article from the blue the other day, and i found the background about lucy and schroeder very moving and it really changed my view of that dynamic. maybe you have a schroeder who can play piano?

Have those poofy shoulder things in the dress. I see that sometimes she has a dress with one of those tie things in back. Look at some photos.

Maybe make a cardboard Snoopy cutout like the one in this image and every once in awhile hold it up to your cheek and yell, "Dog germs! I've got dog germs!"

Or something like that.

"Fussbudget of the Year" award to carry?

All of those cute things suggested above won't get you want you want -- instant recognizability... What you need is a crew of folks to go as the other characters. Then you're blue dress will be read as Lucy easily, while without a snoopy / charlie / linus / pigpen, I think that this costume will flop.

It's all about the hair, but it can't really be reproduced with real hair. I'd propose making a helmet-like wig out of paper mache.

Great idea!

Seconding the answer that attaching her psychiatric booth to you will be easily identifiable. Not quite sure how you would do it, but I'm envisioning either wearing an appliance box that you've decked out with THE DOCTOR IS IN signs, or making something out of cardboard and hanging it off you. Not that Lucy was a real fan of Snoopy, but carrying a Snoopy doll might help with the ID.
