Help me find this Peanuts strip

Help me find this Peanuts strip.

There's a Peanuts comic strip I would like to track down. I know what happens in it but have no way of locating the strip itself:

Lucy is offering one of the other characters (say Linus) a choice of two flavours of ice cream*. Charlie Brown whispers to Linus that if he says he can't decide then Lucy will give him both. Linus follows Charlie Brown's advice and Lucy replies that in that case she won't give him anything. Charlie Brown makes his face signifying that once again nothing goes right for him.

* I'm not 100% on the details so it could be other characters (besides Charlie Brown of course, he is in it for sure) or even another good in question (ice cream, cookies?). But the sequence of events ought to be as presented above.

A link to the strip itself would be ideal, but failing that if someone out there knows what collection it is in that could work as well.

It's for a birthday present. I gave a friend the choice of the new SMB game or Mario Kart for his 3DS and he hasn't given me his decision yet. I'm going to give him both but giving him a card first with only the strip inside would be a bit of fun.

Do you remember whether it's a Sunday strip or weekday? Also, any idea of how old it is?

This is the closest I can find - it involves Lucy, Charlie Brown, and ice cream flavor choices, but the storyline is different. Of all of the comics tagged with "icecream" on Roasted Peanuts, it comes the closest to what you describe.

Does a mefite run that site? Look at the tagline...

I am pretty sure I remember reading a strip like this in a collection. I bet it's from before 1970.

If troika doesn't have it, you could do it the hard way.

There is a compendium being published called The Complete Peanuts that is to contain all of the strips. So far they have published 1950 - 1982.

If your profile is up to date, you can check out the Toronto Public Library, which carries most, if not all, of the volumes.

Ha, I didn't meant to suggest that I run that blog! Was just remarking on the reference to beanplating, sorry about that.

I can't easily find the Roasted Peanuts guy's email on that site, but maybe you could leave a comment and ask him directly?

Augh, I can picture this strip in my head, but my Complete Peanuts collections are in storage. I want to say that the character offering was actually Violet or Patty, and it was Charlie Brown being advised by Schroeder or Shermy. In other words, it was an early strip, maybe mid-50s. (Schulz may have reused the gag later with Linus and Lucy, but I don't recall it.)

Response by poster: I highly doubt I read it in the paper. So it either was in a collection (and an older collection at that) or a one-off reprinting in a magazine/textbook to highlight some point.

Response by poster: It is extremely possible that it is an early strip as the collections I read in the 80s were quite old at that time. Also, some of the ones on the Roasted Peanuts site from the 50s were familiar to me.

I remember it. It was definitely from the fifties. And I'm pretty sure it involved two bags of candy, if that helps.

I know this one, and I'm at my parents' place -- they have the complete collections. We're about to have dinner, but if I have time later on, I'll take a look. But I know it exists!

Best answer: Found it! March 21, 1953. It was Charlie Brown giving the advice to Shermy, who was being offered candy by Violet.

Response by poster: Meghamora that is the one! How did you find it?

Thank you everyone! By including the comic in the card I won't have to supply any wit of my own.

There is a compendium being published called The Complete Peanuts that is to contain all of the strips.

And a key feature of these books is the extensive Index each one has, for situations just like this.

any portmanteau in a storm - Glad to help! I could picture the art style pretty clearly, even though I wasn't quite sure about the characters, so I pulled up the GoComics Peanuts archive and looked at various strips from the 1950s until I pinpointed the likely year. From there it was just an enjoyable click through 1953 until I found the specific strip. (Any excuse to flip through the Peanuts archive, especially the early years, is a welcome diversion for me.)
