phpBB 2 killfile script

Can you help me find and install a script that will hide posts from certain users on a phpBB 2 forum?

I'm running Win XP and FF 2.0.0.6. I just installed Greasemonkey, but I have no previous experience with it. Googling keeps bringing me here, but the "you can get it here" link there doesn't do anything when I click it. I've found a couple of others that seem to install correctly but then don't produce any noticeable effects. What am I missing?

There is definitely a GM user script for this, have you looked at userscript.org? There is an extension to firefox which is out of date and from what I remember it wont install on the newest releases because it was only valid up till 2.0. The GM userscript does work (I use it, but I can't tell you much more because my machine nuked itself the other day).

It doesn't completely hide the users posts, just the content, and u can still see a user name and an X next to their name to unhide their posts.

Sometimes they require that you manually add the usernames to the file, but some versions you just click X and it remembers to hide that users posts.

With the ones you installed - did you edit them to have the distinct variable needed to block that person? IE, depending on the script, did you enter the person's username?

Response by poster: chrisbucks, I assume you mean userscripts.org? I did search there, and it brought me here. The script on that page doesn't do anything, and the links in the comments either don't work or take me to the page I linked in my question.

Rabulah, I didn't edit the scripts at all - the ones I've tried so far all say that they add some functionality in which I can click something on the forum page that will hide a user's posts.

My broken collarbone is still bothering me, but if you don't find a good solution in the next week or so, let me know and I might be back to semi-normal typing/programming by then. If so, I can modify my Mondo Meta Greasemonkey script to work with phpBB since I have phpBB board to test on, and it should do the trick for you quite nicely. I don't think it would require too much recoding; mostly ripping out a lot of the overhead, as phpBB has a simpler internal structure than MetaFilter. Actually, I had another person ask about kill-filing on my phpBB board a few days ago (unless that was you) so apparently phpBB 2.x kill-filling is an ability sufficiently in demand to get a decent script out there for the masses.

As far as Greasemonkey scripts, there were recent serious problems with the Greasemonkey extension, of the "what in the hell were they thinking releasing this version in this shape" category. As a result, getting good updates and installs of existing scripts required the user to manually go in and delete all previous copies of the GM script on the drive and reinstall the script from scratch, or else things would not work properly and silently fail. So make sure you have the most recent Greasemonkey extension which fixes the superbug (at least it appears to fix it, haven't had to help anyone with it lately).

Response by poster: Sounds good mdevore. I've got GM 0.7 from June 7th, which seems to be the newest. And that wasn't me asking for it before. If you do end up making one, please link it here.

As a follow-up, the public killfile script is available for downloading at the userscripts.org site.
