Please help my ipaq talk to my PC

Can someone point me towards a version of ActiveSync that doesn't require XP service pack 2?
For several reasons, we took the decision not to upgrade to XP service pack 2. It interfered with the network settings too much.
I'm trying to install ActiveSync for my Ipaq 1950 (which runs windows mobile 5), to exchange files only - not calendar or email - between my ipaq and pc. But the two versions of ActiveSync available from the microsoft website don't work.
ActiveSync 4.5 wont install. The error message says I'm lacking a DLL, but wont tell me which one so I can't fix the problem.
ActiveSync 4.1 (which is also the version that came on the setup disk with my ipaq) refuses to install because I am not running the "latest service packs".
Is there an older version of ActiveSync or equivalent software somewhere on the web that will let my ipaq talk to my pc without having to ruin our home network in the process?

Get SP2. You'll have bigger problems in the future such as not having security updates from MS.
What network problems? Also dont believe the FUD about the outgoing connection limit. It doesnt interfere with torrent download speeds.

I don't know if you have a laptop or a desktop, but to send files to the iPaq you could use infrared, which doesn't require ActiveSync at all.

Get SP2. It was painless, and I haven't had any issues resulting from it.

And if damn dirty ape is referring to what I think (s)he's referring too, it's patchable.
You really should get SP2 for security reasons; those network problems are probably resolvable if you look into it some more.

While I agree with everyone who says to get SP2, you can install the latest version of ActiveSync without it. You'll just need to install the newer version of the Windows Installer, at least 3.0 (available here). I've just confirmed that on a test box, and it worked like a charm.
I'm not sure if version 3.1 will install on SP1, but if so I'd go with that one instead.

4.0 should work except that it isn't very good and will frequently be unable to synchronise or see your device.4.3 and onwards start to look better.
In short, you should consider sucking SP2 as the longer you leave it, the more applications that you'll have problems with.
