Feel like bestowing me with a snappy DJ moniker?

DJ name me, if you please.

So I just got asked to guest DJ a little dance night my friend puts on in Toronto. Well, more like fake mp3-type DJing, but I'm okay with that for now. Here's my point: I've only got a couple weeks to prepare, but most importantly, I'm missing a DJ name. Hit me, people! [If it helps, I'll be playing dancey indie electro type stuff to hipsterish mid-twenties urban types. I don't have a complicated haircut or anything though.] Have some fun with this!

Response by poster: @dhammond: Honestly, my friend and I were just talking about that name, but a friend of mine used it a few years back and I have to respect that. But yes, best DJ name ever. Keep 'em coming, y'all...

Pawl Okenfold
Rony Skies
Karl Kox
Bruder and Morfmeister

Are you female? Too bad if you are, because the coolest female DJ name in the world is already taken: Beverly Skillz.

Disclaimer: She's my sister.

When I was spinning I came up with a new name for almost every gig. I'd think that my set had gotten so much better that I wanted to differentiate myself from my last incarnation. Ha! Like it mattered!

Oh, and what's your area code? That's always cool.

318 Underground
512 Posse

It's better for naming a DJ collective. So when you and your friend are playing together you're representing the 416 Stunnaz.

Besides the DJ Tanner you know, there's also at least one other one. He released a mixtape called Turntable of Contents with Nikoless Skratch.

Or, if you don't like DJ 'schade, how about DJ Freud? DJ Fraud?
posted by box at 2:10 PM on June 23, 2007

Response by poster: I really do like DJ Schade, especially since it means "shame" in German, but it's pronounced almost exactly like DJ Shadow. Which makes it simultaneously amazing and intimidating as far as name associations go.

There's already a DJ Connor in Chicago.

Personally, I don't think you absolutely NEED a dj name... with the rise of laptop djs, EVERYBODY has a dj name, and it's almost at the oversaturation point, IMHO. If it doesn't come naturally... well, it can be cheesy. Just saying. (I've hosted a couple shows on a local community radio station for years now, and dj out occasionally, and I always use my real name.)

That being said, if the party is called "No Guff," why don't you call your self DJ Guffman, as in Waiting for Guffman?

I have always wanted to go as "DJ Escher".

But then it would make sense to play records whose groove was a circle instead of a spiral, and your record just constantly repeated itself eternally. Which would make more sense if you were spinning house.
