Help me find a book from my childhood!

I'm trying to figure out the name of a book from my childhood; some things I can remember are a computer named Sherlock, a robot dog, and some sort of holographic chess game. [mi]

The book was one of these young-adult type novels; it takes place on an island, where the main characters' parents are working on some secret project. Something strange happens, and they build Sherlock to try to help them solve the mystery that has cropped up (whose nature I can't recall); the robot dog is built during this period as well.

I also remember something about one of the parents having come up with a fancy holographic chess-ish game..

I'm drawing a blank at the main portion of the storyline, but surely one of you knows exactly what I'm talking about?
