Wo to go?

What should I do this weekend in Germany?

I have a free weekend during my two-week business trip to Germany. What should I do?

I'm staying in Dresden, and I have a car. I can leave Friday evening and I need to return by Sunday night. Transportation by train would probably be preferable, but driving is okay.

I generally enjoy (in no particular order) nature, art, history, science and more(not too focused; sorry. I like lots of things). Any combination of these would be lovely. I'd rather visit one area and explore it thoroughly (as much as two days can offer) rather than hop around between a lot of very different places.

One interesting idea I though of is to try to put together a tour of wineries in this region. I'm a big fan of Muller Thurgau, so it might be a good match. Does anyone have leads on good wineries?

Check out the Frauenkirche cathedral in town. It reopened recently after been bombed in WW2, neglected during the cold war and finally being restored to its former glory

Go to the world's oldest christmas market, even if you just wander around for a few hours before doing something more profound. However, if it's anything like the Strasbourg affair, they've organised a bunch of cultural events around the town for you [tourists during the market]. It will be fantastic.

Leipzig (also on Wikipedia), which is just over an hour from Dresden by fast train (1:40 by slower train), has a lot of art, history and science to offer. It also has a Christmas market.

If you can read German, there is a good page of links to museum/gallery websites here.

Response by poster: I've been to the Frauenkirche and the Christmas Market, though I haven't picked up one of the famous "Stollen" yet.

Leipzig sounds interesting and convenient.

I should have mentioned earlier that I don't speak German.

Dresden has a lot to offer so maybe you want to spend at least one day there. The Frauenkirche has been mentioned, but there is plenty more: Why don't you visit The Green Vault, the Zwinger or see and listen to an opera at the Semper Opera (for more infos and if you have to time to peruse the site, see the official city's homepage).

If you want to you could catch a train going to Berlin and explore the city, it's only a two hour trip (check the website of the Deutsche Bundesbahn [click Internat. Guests for an English version] for connections, online-tickets and prices). As for the things there, check Berlin's official website.

This is all very general, but if there's something you specifically want to do just post again.

As to wineries: I am afraid you are in an unfortunate spot for that, the main wine areas are generally more in the west and south of Germany, but there is one area in Saxony and the northernmost area Saale Unstrut.

Having been underwhelmed by Dresden and Leipzig, I'd make tracks for Berlin. Or Poland, if you're feeling adventerous.
