My son is travelling to Germany with his school choir in February. He has his passport, luggage, and spending money. He has asked us to get him a travel pillow and a passport holder. Do you know the best travel pillow and/or passport holder? If so, please point at them. What else should we get him to help him have a fun and safe trip? [more inside]
Berlin Filter: I'm heading to Germany soon, and I was disappointed to learn that the Stasi Museum will be closed while I'm there. What's the next best destination for a tourist curious about the inner workings of the East German secret police?
My wife and I are in Berlin until this Saturday morning (Oct. 4th). We'd like to go Out On The Town (i.e. Drinking and dancing) one night, but there seem to be no end of places to go and I'm kind of at a loss. Can anyone suggest any particular nights/venues/events? [more inside]
I will be by myself in Munich next week, for about a day. I'd feel remiss if I didn't experience at least a bit of Oktoberfest, but I'm having trouble understanding it. Help me do Oktoberfest right in one day? [more inside]
Let's say you're a young artist. And you're headed to Berlin in spring. You plan on fully immersing yourself in local culture once you get there -- you're going to get a studio, mingle at pubs and learn about your neighborhood. But you'd like a boost on the art scene. You want to get culturally & conversationally fluent! [more inside]
I'll be traveling with my (American) family for around 20 days in Germany. We would like to have two phones for short term use to handle brief day to day communication. Best options? [more inside]
I'm in Berlin for a conference, and I'm trying to squeeze some time in the city around our program. I've been to Berlin several times before and there is a bus tour as part of the even, so I've got the major tourists sites covered, but need suggestions for late night and early morning suggestions. I'm in Berlin this week for the first time! I like tiny strange museums, free things, cafes with live music, markets, parks, walking around outside, bookstores, cheap food, and interesting shops. Basically I love cities and I want to understand about what this city is like. I'd love suggestions for neighbourhoods to wander around in. [more inside]
So...I applied for and received a grant to learn/research/write abroad for 4 months starting in March in the field of librarianship and informatics. The grant will pay for food, shelter, and travel (4 cities in Germany, if it matters). The grant agency is going to try and help me find temporary housing. Very fortunately, my job is ok with this and excited about what I will learn, so I have a job to come back to. I am simultaneously excited and terrified. IF you've done something like this before...any recommendations? [more inside]
My husband and I are spending next weekend in Leipzig - arriving Friday evening leaving Sunday afternoon/evening, getting to and from by car. We are couchsurfing with people in the south of the city, and have very little in the way of plans other than seeing the train station (we werre last in Leipzig over a decade ago and the train station was closed due to a bomb threat, so we really want to see it this time). Places to visit, places to eat, cake/beer/meals not to be missed - all ideas gratefully recieved.

This is a tripartite question, actually. Where to go in Dresden for: 1) Vintage clothing (not "antique stores," but if the only vintage is to be found in antique stores that'll do); 2) French hair products (see below); 3) genuinely good but inexpensive local cafes and restos? [more inside]

On my way to Eastern Europe, I will have a 6-hour layover in Munich. Would it be feasible to buy a quick snack and run to the Pinakothek in that interval or at least get out of the airport at all (please recommend destinations)?

I'm planning on taking a solo trip to Berlin for a week. As a general guideline, if I stick to cafes (and the occasional doner kebab) how much should I expect to spend on food?
