Celebrating in Berlin

My parents (early 70s) are celebrating their 50th (!) wedding anniversary mid February and are taking us (myself, my brother and SIL (40s) and their daughters, 13 and 15) to Berlin for the week. Woohoo! We're Dutch and going by train. My parents and I have been to the city previously, brother and fam have not. Give me all your recommendations please! [more inside]

Help us plan a five-night road trip to the Black Forest in Germany! We plan to travel to/from Utrecht in the Netherlands in mid-August. Please suggest places to visit and stay, food to eat, things to do! We are especially interested in lush scenery, folklore and spooky stuff, and nighttime views of the Milky Way. [more inside]

Berlin in 2023

Will be back in Berlin later this month for 4 nights. Was there in 2020 for a super short visit. Y'all gave me some good advice last time; got any new advice? What should I eat, where should I go? Am a fan of food, thrift shops, flea markets, farmers markets, film, queer-friendly spaces, and good sex toy shops. Please note: I do not drink alcohol. Am not a vegan but am vegan friendly.

What should I do in Frankfurt?

I’m spending a couple of days in Frankfurt. I like quirky stuff, social experiments, and any sort of event or space that fosters interaction among people. Basically, I like something where you can show up and interact with people, or something weird and unusual, and bonus points for something that is both those things. What would you recommend? Unusual/unique hotels in SW Germany

I'm looking for recommendations of places to stay in the West of Germany (roughly) south of Mannheim and north of Freiburg im Breisgau. I'm particularly interested in places that are a bit unusual or have some character (e.g. castles, farms, or places otherwise off the beaten track). [more inside]

Are the Christmas markets in Dusseldorf open?

We (American couple) love going German Christmas markets. We're planning to go to Dusseldorf a few weeks from now, but we're worried that the markets won't be open after reading the very sad news that the Christmas markets in Bavaria and Saxony can't open this year. [more inside]

Purchasing a hard sided cat crate in Frankfurt Airport?

This coming spring we'll be moving from Denver to Tbilisi, Georgia, with our cats. We're able to have both of them in cabin with us from Denver to Frankfurt, but apparently one will have to be in the hold for the Frankfurt to Tbilisi leg. We can work with this, but I can't figure out how we're going to find a hard crate at the airport. Lufthansa didn't have any suggestions -- anyone have any ideas?

American accountant with no CPA looking for a job in Germany

I am planning to move to Germany with my fiancee, who is an EU citizen but not from Germany but she speaks German fluently. I am an accountant and I have around 8 years experience, but my title is still staff accountant, and I have no CPA. However, I do have a Masters in Accounting. I also do not currently speak German, but I have a strong interest to learn it since I like languages. I just want to know what the job market in Germany will be like for me with the credentials I listed above. Will I have a difficult time finding a job?

Last-Minute Trip to Germany

My partner is going to Germany for work, (Hamburg, Frankfurt) and I impulsively bought tickets to visit. They were an unbelievable deal. The low cost is offset by the fact that the tickets don't go exactly where I need to be. There will be trains and buses involved. I don't speak German. Having never been to Germany, how feasible is this? [more inside]

Heidelberg, Germany: camera store stocking Olympus camera batteries?

All my preparations for a trip to Heidelberg went so great except for one thing: I am an idiot and left my Olympus E-M1 Mark 1 camera batteries in and around the battery charger at home. Does anyone know of a shop in Heidelberg that carries Olympus camera gear and might have Olympus BLN-1 batteries? I have a portable charger, just none of the batteries. I arrive Sunday (tomorrow) and am staying in the city center.
