My new macbook pro won't make any sound.

My new macbook pro won't make any sound. It did, but at some point today something changed. Now there is no sound and when i try to adjust the volume with the keyboard i see the sound icon with a crossed out circle below. When i try to adjust in system preferences i am not able to grab the slider with the mouse. But it does make the startup sound when i restart. Does anyone know how to fix this? Or what setting has changed?

In your Sound panel in System Preferences, under the Sound Effects tab, is the Mute button checked next to the Output Volume bar?
