Looking for good Frankfurt Hotel

Could anybody recommend a nice hotel in Frankfurt?

My wife and I will be in Germany next week, and would like to spend 1 night in Frankfurt (sans-children) to celebrate her upcoming 40th birthday. Could anybody suggest a nice hotel in the downtown area, close to the major Christmas markets? We were looking at the Hilton Frankfurt, but if we could find a nice place that's somewhat cheaper we'd prefer that.

I don't remember the exact name of the place I stayed at several years ago, but look at the hotels just off of Duesseldorfer Strasse (looking at Google Maps I want to say I stayed somewhere on Muenchener Strasse). They were fairly nice and relatively cheap (to cater to the train travelers).

The other option is to look at the hostels in Frankfurt and pick a place that lets you buy out a room for cheap.

With the caveat that its been a couple of years since I stayed there, and all of this may have changed: I had a great experience with the Hotel Bristol. Its right near the Frankfurt Main train station (for good or bad) and its a very trendy modern hotel. The rooms and lobby were all very nice and they include a fantastic breakfast buffet.
All this and they are really quite cheap.

If you are going for the romantic getaway, this may be a bit euro-trash for you; they even play techno on their website http://www.bristol-hotel.de/en/bristol_hotel.php
But I thought it was great.

I stayed at the Pension Aller, too. It was awesome and the woman who runs it is super nice and the rates were quite good, especially for the size of the place.

I second the Hotel Bristol. Inexpensive, but really really lovely, and they have a great bar. The barman was really knowledgeable, and their top shelf selection was extensive. The breakfast buffet was excellent, and it's all very modern and trendy.

It's very close to the train station and shopping.

I had a good visit at the Hotel Topas, on the north side of the Hauptbahnhof, Niddastrasse 88. Chic and inexpensive (but that was eight years ago; things may have changed).
