Where do I stay in Taos?

6 people, going mid-january, would like to stay close. Are there good ski-in places at Taos? I don't want to spend a lot. In the past I've done some great packages at breckenridge, vail, wolf creek and others that have been reasonable but very close to the slopes. I'm having trouble finding any kind of packages or specials or info at all. Any recommendations would be appreciated, or advice as to why I would want to stay somewhere besides right near the slopes. Tell me about Taos, I've never been. Thanks!

For super cheap you could try the Abominable Snowmansion in Arroyo Seco, about 10 minutes from Taos.

I've never been there, but you could certainly go to the place being shilled at thepurification.org and see if the whole hullabaloo was worth it a month or so ago.

Don't know that this will be of any help? I live in Denver and get to Taos every so often. But not for skiing and usually as a couple. So don't know about 6 together?

It can be expensive and filled up in the right season. We have not had success with the historic and expensive places so have come to prefer places near the plaza (especially for walking to) and mostly the usual chains. If you are looking for a ski-in or near the slopes I can't help.

It is a funky town for a few days alright.

Consider the Quality Inn, the Budget Host or the Hampton Inn for decent accommodations and reasonable prices. I think they are all on the Paseo Del Pueblo?

A couple of others that I have not stayed at, but look good are the Sagebrush and the Burch Street Casitos. On the other hand, maybe not these for a bunch of young folks going boardin'.

Good luck. Come enjoy Colorado sometime.

Just in case you somehow missed it, here is the AskMe & the followup MeTa. It would be fun if we all threw in and you could go as some kind of psychotic doomsday cultist, just to get them back for wasting our time so terribly.

Oh btw, the Abominable Snow mansion is maybe 10 minutes from town of Taos, but closer to the TSV than the town.

another btw... striker didn't mention ski or snowboard ... TSV does not allow snowboards. If you want to snowboard in New Mexico, go to Angel Fire

Wow Jonsnews and UbuRoivas, I had missed that insane thread. Remind me to call on the amazing superpowers of AskMe if I'm ever trapped in an 80s hacker movie!

serazin, i can pre-empt that need: if trapped in an 80s hacker movie, just remember to get the computer to try to beat itself at noughts-&-crosses / tic-tac-toe. it will go into something like an infinite loop, which enables you to escape / switch it off / whatever.

just returned from new mexico. we stayed in red river but skiied two days in taos (well we tried - they only had two slopes open).

Taos Ski Valley is 20 miles from the Plaza of Taos the town. The road is not bad, but could get tricky if there is lots of snow. The drive and the alpine village atmosphere are the two reasons to stay on the mountain. In the past there were few choices up there, but now there are very nice places to stay. Literal ski in options - Kandahar, Snakedance Inn, Edelwiess Lodge and Spa(this looks really nice), Hotel St Bernard (this has been there a million years and has a good rep). I don't know the prices, but these are seriously right at the slopes. There are other condo options within walking distance St Bernard Condos, Sierra del Sol and Rio Hondo condos have all been around for awhile. I have stayed years ago at SdS and Rio Hondo- I would guess they would be the best prices within walking distance to the lifts.

Down the road a mile or so are several inns, Amizette, Columbine, Inn at Taos Valley, Austing Haus, that had lots of cars at them last weekend. More funky than near the lifts and quite possibly more reasonable.

Abominable Snowmansion is a inside joke with us. Arroyo Seco has made vast improvements in past years and is really a funky in a good way place. The snowmansion appears to be funky in a bad way.

In town, the La Fonda is an old school historical place to stay but had not been remodeled like the one in Santa Fe, which is really, really nice. Stay there in Taos and you can stay just like DH Lawrence used to, if you are into that sort of thing. The Taos Inn is a popular gathering place. The Best Western Kachina looks nice, and is in a good location.

Have fun. I will be jealous providing they get lots more snow. My favorite part of the mountain is the backside, but if you are great skiiers there are lots of runs to hike up the ridge to.

i just noticed you are in OKC. If you have never driven to taos before and do a Rand McNally or Google map that tells you to go all the way to Raton or something stupid, I can get you there easier.

We ran into several people that were sent way out of their way thru construction by online mapping services.

From OKC, driving thru raton is definitely wrong. Go 40 west to 285, then 285 north to Santa Fe. You'll hit I-25, take it to St Francis drive. Make your way across Santa Fe. Continue on 285 North thru Pojoaque to Espanola, then 68 north to Taos.
