I would believe it. One of my friends lives in the house that Korn owned in Long Beach, CA. When they bought the house, there was one room that was entirely black -- black shag carpet, black walls, black ceiling. It had an interesting assortment of knobs attached with some serious hardware to the walls/frame of the house. The laborers that they hired to gut the room walked off the job after peeling the carpeting up.

Yeah, SpecialK, I'm on the edge of my seat.

I'm guessing that this is just an example of off-the-cuff storytelling, and Colin Meloy was just employing the old trope of paralepsis: omission for rhetorical effect. He left out the details, because the mystery is more interesting than whatever gruesome detail he might have supplied.

Sorry if I just ruined your own story, SpecialK. Unless it's actually true?

You might want to try the Decemberists' very active message board for the best chance of getting an answer to this question.

It's an old sci-fi and horror movie principle: if you never show the monster, the audience will imagine something way scarier than you could ever come up with.

I think SpecialK's just makin' a point folks. You can finish that story with whatever you want under the carpet... (keeping in mind that whatever you make up, ironically Korn has probably done something different but equally disturbing :)).

Hey, sorry for the suspense, I had trick-or-treating and real life and drinking wine to deal with! Y'all should really try getting away from the computer once in a while...

The carpet was so soaked through with various crusty and probably body-originated fluids that the day laborers refused to touch it anymore, and wouldn't peel up the very, very visibly stained padding underneath the carpet. We're talking groaty, folks.

The pool equipment also had to be replaced because the pump had at one point gotten several condoms sucked into it and they were blocking some things and had wrapped around other things.

And yes, this is true... the guy who owns it is a custom software developer that works with my parents.

That's one principle I wish horror and sci-fi directors would friggin' use more often.
