Need some songs about Ice Cream & Candy
August 14, 2006 4:33 PM   Subscribe

I'm putting together a music playlist for a kids' ice cream social at my son's elementary school and I need a lot of songs about ice cream and candy. Each song should have ice cream and/or candy mentioned prominently (i.e., people who haven't heard the song before and who are only half listening to it should quickly catch the connection). Sexual references/double entendre should be kept to a minimum (i.e., Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man" is OK, but "Candy Shop" by 50 Cent is not) -- we're talking 5-year olds here, but hip 5-year olds. The more genres the better! Stuff I've got so far: Ice Cream Man by Van Halen Lollipop by the Chordettes Various ice cream truck jingle mp3s from WFMU's Beware of the Blog Sugar Sugar by the Archies (Your love is better than) Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow Ice Cream by Laurie Berkner

How about "Candy Rain" by Soul For Real? It's peppy, and not suggestive.

This ice cream shop down the street from me plays nothing but songs about ice cream and candy. I wonder if they would send you the playlist if you emailed them. Might be worth a try.

The Good Ship Lollipop -- Shirley Temple
On the good ship lollipop.
Its a sweet trip to a candy shop
Where bon-bons play
On the sunny beach of Peppermint Bay.

Lemonade stands everywhere.
Crackerjack bands fill the air.
And there you are
Happy landing on a chocolate bar.

"Savoy Truffle" by the Beatles is all about candy -- allegedly inspired by Eric Clapton's notorious sweet tooth. Also, a couple of old ska tunes might fit the bill: "My Boy Lollipop" by Millie and "Sweet & Dandy" by Toots & the Maytals (the second one's less of a perfect match, as it actually references cake and cola, but it's still in the sugary treats family).

All Good Scabs by Lederhosen Lucil. It's only about 1/3 about candy, but it's all weird and bubbly and fun and fine for kids.

New Bad Things have a great song with the lyric "Of all the beverages I could choose from/You're the one that I most wanna put in my lunch/You're better than Dr. Pepper/You're sweeter than Hawaiian Punch". Can't find a link though.

I always thought "Candy" by the Presidents of the United States of America had pretty funny lyrics.

Now the devil she must be a dentist
With deep jawbreaker eyes
Red rope hair, gumdrop lips
Cotton candy thighs

Sounds like the album Cow Tunes for Kids would be perfect for you. I have it and it's very fun. There are a few songs that are specifically about icecream but the whole album would probably work.
