Been to New Zealand's Chatham Islands?

We're going in October (because it's remote and it's part of the country!) and the webspace is pretty thin with information. I've got accommodation and flights and a car booked; anything special I should see or do?

I went there many years ago and, as the web-site indicates, if you like fishing there is plenty to do. Lots of nice walks in the brisk outdoors and of course take lots of film and whatever is the equivalent for digital cameras. It is strange to hear the locals talk about New Zealand as if it were an another country.

According to the NZ Lonely Planet there are some 200-year-old Moriori tree and stone carvings worth seeking out: the former in "a grove adjacent to the old Te Hapupu aerodrome" and the latter "on the shores of Whanga Lagoon". Crayfishing is apparently popular, as is diving amid the shipwrecks. It also mentions that there's no ATM there, so you'll probably want to bring cash or something (I wonder if they have the new coins yet?)

Response by poster: I scarcely have the new coins here in Auckland. I've only got a little 50c so far and I've been spending cash on purpose to try and get some. /end derail

Don't know anything about Chatham. But if you like travelling to remote parts of New Zealand, consider taking a trip down to Stewart Island some time. It's quite interesting, great hikes and nature and some funky old island people.
