Easy Podcast player for Android?

I consume podcasts mainly from my phone. I'm looking for an easy podcasting solution for Android.
I used to use Pocket Casts, but magically around the time they turned their business to a subscription model the free version stopped working for me. For a while after that, I limped along with Google Podcasts, but they shut that down this week
I just want something easy, that will let me subscribe to different podcasts, will download them for when I'm away from the internet, and knows which episodes I've listened to and which ones I haven't. A huge bonus would be the ability to listen to individual podcast episodes without subscribing, but that is not essential.
Free would be nice, but I'm willing to pay (once) for an app, I just don't want to do Spotify or Apple or any of those subscription services.
Any help for me out there? Why is this so hard in 2024?

A recent ask had antennapod mentioned- I haven't used it yet but I have downloaded it to poke around in.

I just switched from Google Podcasts (boo) to AntennaPod; seems decent so far.

Podcast Addict is my choice as well.

I've used it daily for about five years. It's got all the features I need. I pay for it to remove ads but you can use it for free too.
