What driving game was I playing?

Twentysome years ago, when I was in college, I had on-site captioning with a steno machine hooked up to a laptop. One of the captionists had a driving game on the laptop that I could play while the captionist recorded the discussion session we attended. I've always wondered what the game was.

It was nothing elaborate like Gran Turismo. It was just a car on a track. I don't remember if I was racing other cars. The graphics were pretty good. This wasn't Pole Position. It was 3D. I could ram the orange cones on the track. That's all I remember.

You could try having a look through this MobyGames search and seeing if you recognise any of the names. Orange traffic cones makes me think of Colin McRae Rally, but that's probably a bit UK-specific...

2000's Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed included some cone drills. Matches the timeline (although narrowing down twentysome to a year would help) and has orange cones.
Clip of that driving.

Redline was a car racing game with pretty good graphics that was released in 2006. Here's a snippet of gameplay.

It was Mac-only, so if the computer in question wasn't a Mac then it probably wasn't this. On the other hand, it was available as a shareware download; I feel like it was pretty common for college folks to have the "free", unregistered versions of such games on their computers around that time.
