But, to redeem myself, there is a huge list of “General” companies on the SEC’s Edgar database. There are many near-duplicates (like many General Atlantic affiliates) but you can page through for some interesting ones.

Most if not all U.S. states have something like a secretary of state web site that allows you to search business entities by name. Your profile says you're in Michigan so this is the page to use; a search yields 1,858 businesses licensed in the state with names starting with "General."
