Why does my iMac screensaver keep returning to the same pics?

I've got nearly 400 photographs in my iMac's screensaver folder (and have ticked the "shuffle slide order" box), but it's always the same handful that turn up when the screensaver's actually running. What's going on?

Do you use spaces with multiple desktops? If so the configuration of desktops and screen savers is a little buggy. For some settings you need to first switch to the relevant space and then set the option in System Preferences.
Use the Control key with left and right arrows to switch spaces.

Sounds like it's time to look for some clues...What's unique about the ones that get shown? Same file-type? Same permissions? Added on the same day? Taken on the same day? Same resolution? First files when sorted by filename? Last files?

Then, what's different about them compared with the others?
