Is this the first Name My Dog of 2023?

We adopted a wonderful male dog yesterday but still trying to find the right name for him. Time to name that dog!

Dog tax here. The rescue listed him as a Fox Terrier mix, but he could be anything. He's 2-3 years old, about 13lb, but leggy-- maybe he's mixed with a Jack Russell and a whippet? He's got splotchy fur on his back and a few neat white splashes, very foxlike and athletic.

We are toying with naming him Laszlo (inspired by Matt Berry's character in What We Do in the Shadows), but still trying to come up with other possible names. We aren't super big on common human names typically but open to suggestions if he resembles something to you! We were trying to think of possible names based on some of our interests: food, astronomy, physics, British comedies, anime, art supplies, colors, history, birds, mythology (our last dog was named Leviathan), muppets, or possibly a word from a foreign language like Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian or Japanese. Or else maybe something that reminds you of speed, foxiness, or his coloration.

A couple of the kinds of names that were early contenders if that helps spark your ideas:
Justy, Sparks, Kermit, Hoshi, Lark, Cyan, Ricochet, Denji, Kirby, Goose, Aero, Edmund, Pinto, Typo, Orzo, Satsuma.

Thanks in advance!!

When I clicked on the photo, I thought "that's Piper." I have no reason for this.

Kirby is always a 100% perfect pet name. I like Laszlo too. He'd be a great Laszlo.

He looks like gorgeous pure trouble in the best way. Congrats!

I like a two-syllable name (or easy nickname) to be able to call them more easily. And I feel this dog can carry a heavy-consonant-sound Anglo-Gaelic name like Gryphon (or Griffin), Finnegan, Lachlan(n), Dermot, Fergus, Alasdair/Alastair, Duncan, Declan.

I too like Laszlo for him, but I went right to Rupert when I looked his photo with your comment in mind.

Kit would also be a nice option (short for Kitsune to pick up his foxiness, and it means cat in Ukrainian, so it can also be a silly name if desired).

Grommit. Simply because I get a kick out of the Wallace and Grommit movies.

I like Kirby, and Henry is what first popped in my mind.

I feel like Laszlo may be the winner, but will toss out Homba (lapin for fox in Watership Down and Tod (fox in Middle English, and hence the name of the fox in many stories). Oh, also Robin, for the animated Robin Hood.

What a great dog!
Jackson, Zeke, Ozzy, Vince, Fellah
I like the British names - Rupe/Rupert, Albert/Bertie, Reg, Lennie, Cyril, Tristan
and I like Laszlo

Re Muppets, he's a little like Harrison Fox from Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas. He also looks very dignified, like a butler named Harrison.

I find myself leaning towards names with a -y sound at the end, though now I’m thinking Rocket or Jackson would work. I also thought Sparky, maybe Eddie. Also I feel like a weirdo for knowing this but Ed Yong has a dog named Typo - I don’t mean that as a pro or a con, just an FYI.

Playing on the fox theme, Zorro is Spanish for fox and Renard is French for fox. His prominent ears also remind me of a donkey so maybe Donkey as in Shrek.

My dearly departed Westie worked as a Therapy Dog for many years at the VA Medical Center. A patient there used to tell me, pretty much every time I visited, that he had had a dog named "Scrappy". I think that would be a fitting name for your new dog, but you also might choose a name similar-sounding to whatever he has been called throughout his life up to this point.

Lazslo is a great name, but this pup looks a little too sweet/heroic to be named after Cravensworth.

Of your alternates, Kirby, Edmund, and Pinto jumped out at me. Seeing as you're a Muppet fan, maybe "Henson?"

I've sometimes thought it might be fun to name a dog after Perkin Warbeck, but it might be hard not to shorten that to "Perky," which isn't great.
