Bought trip for a sick pal. Want to buy trip insurance. Can it pay ME?

So a good friend is sick with cancer. She's getting surgery and will be recovered by Feb. Got her a light at the end of the tunnel trip and bought her flights, hotel and train to see the northern lights in Alaska. Cost about 2k all in. Normally I buy travel insurance but how do I do it so it pays ME if her trip cancels and not HER?

Yes. Check out third-party travel insurance (insurance offered by independent entities, not the outfit that is providing the trip, like the cruise company or airline). This will be less expensive and have better cancellation provisions. Get somebody on the phone there, explain what you are looking for. They offer it, because how else could a parent get paid for a child's trip being canceled. Here's one outfit that explicitly offers insurance for someone other than yourself.

Also remember if you want it to cover cancellation due to her existing health condition, you will need to get a pre-existing conditions waiver.
