Beginner Gardening Books

I am looking for a beginner gardening book aimed at people with a city garden. More details inside!
My boyfriend is getting into the concept of gardening and wants to read beginner books on the topic to develop an understanding of the big picture, and the debates that rage among amateur gardeners. I am looking for overviews, theory, practical how-tos - anything aimed at the amateur. We live in Toronto, so any books about this general geographic region would be appreciated. The garden in question is currently theoretical but will hopefully one day be the front and/or back yard of a house. He is not wedded to a specific type of plant - i.e. herbs, vegetables, flowers, etc - so please feel free to recommend anything.

Seconding Gayla Trail's books (Grow Great Grub, etc.) She's also in Ontario.

I've always loved this and still refer to it after gardening for a long, long time. The photos are inspirational but achievable and the writing is succinct but lively. It's got the right balance of practicality and aspiration.
For just a fun overview--I've gotten a lot of gardening books at Goodwill from Better Homes and Gardens and Rodale and various other publications. Pretty sweeping and a ton of horticultural info and things like 'how to lay a path'.
As far as current debates/attention: peat sustainability, natives, herbicides, pesticides.
