Gmail app only showing 2 lines of text??

When composing a new mail in the Android Gmail app, it only shows the first 2 lines of any text entered, even if I type more of it. The Gmail app and the OS is up to date. This is on a budget Android phone (Le Eco X525), but I've had my share of cheap Chinese smartphones and this is the first time I've had such a problem. Where do I even start troubleshooting?

Is it like that in either orientation?

If I'm holding my phone (a Pixel 3) horizontally (landscape orientation), I only see 2 lines of text as well. Vertically, I see several lines of text. It's possible that changing your keyboard settings so that it takes up less vertical space could help if this is the same issue you're seeing, though I'd expect you'd only be able to get maybe one extra line out of that (by e.g. disabling the number row if you have it enabled).

the OS is up to date

I looked up the phone model online and it seems like the phone was released in 2016 with Android 6? What’s the current Android OS on the phone? Android 11 is the latest stable version of the OS. My experience is that many lower cost Android phones don’t receive many OS upgrades. If your current OS is a few versions away from Android 11, it’s possible the glitch is related to running an older OS version.
