What is this song I vaguely remember?

It's mid-late 90s. Hard alternative/early emo perhaps. The song started with a simple repetitive guitar change. Vocals came in slowly. It had a big loud explosive chorus with distorted guitars and the singer had a fair amount of grit in his voice. I believe either the band or the song had the word "red" in the title. It had a music video. I believe the song was about kids running away from abusive households.

I think the band might have been canadian because I saw the singer intro the video on an episode of much music countdown.

The hosts tried to interview the singer about the songs meaning and he made it plain that he was encouraging kids to run away from abusive house holds and it was kind of awkward. I remember the singer also kinda looked like Roger daltrey from the who.

It's not runaway train by soul asylumn

Your description of the sound reminds me of Radiohead's CREEP....

Is it "Red" by Treble Charger?

Response by poster: I looked up the treble charger and red house painters songs and neither of them appear to be the song I remember

Response by poster: Upon further thinking, this band was definitely a one hit wonder. And the time that this song was in rotation on much music would have been no earlier than 1998 and no later than 2003.

Seein' Red by Unwritten Law?

Response by poster: It's definitely not the red hot chili peppers. I checked out the stiltskin and unwritten law songs and neither of them appear to be what I remember either.

The song started with just clean electric guitar, no drums. The singer had curly kinda shoulder length hair that was sorta blondish. And I'm very sure this song was the bands only kinda sorta hit.

I recall a band called Rockets Red Glare from Toronto that had an album on the charts in the early 2000s, but I can't recall any specific song. Wikipedia says that the album title was Moonlight Desires.

The Red The White The Black The Blue by Hope of the States?

Maybe a bit of a long shot - the lead singer is sorta blond but isn't Canadian (British) and doesn't resemble Roger Daltrey, but it was released in 2003 and has the clean guitar intro, rocky chorus and gravelly voice.

Response by poster: I checked out the rockets red glare and hope of the states songs and they don't appear to be what I'm hazily remembering.

My clearest memory is also probably the least helpful and it's the awkward interview on Much on Demand with the singer and Bradford how where the singer is encouraging kids to run away from home.

I don't have any guesses, but I think the video shown would have had to have been around 2002-2003 based on your memory. I think that's when they changed the format of Much on Demand to have interviews with artists, which I remember because I used to watch MuchMusic all the time, but I have no memory of such a video!

Best guess: The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down?

Worse guesses:

based on the description of the singer and being canadian and nothing else: Hot Hot Heat - Middle of Nowhere

based on canadian and subject matter and opening with just electric guitar: Billy Talent - Devil in a Midnight Mass

Response by poster: Yeah the more I think about it this most likely between 2002-2003. It's not the red jumpsuit apparatus. They were a few years after the time period I'm remembering.

It's not hot hot heat. I love that band and would definitely remember this song if it was one of theirs.

It wasn't Billy talent. Sadly.

Here's a one-hit wonder alternative song from 2001-2003 whose title sounds like "red":
