Webinar-type software for recorded conference presentation

Next week I'm scheduled to give a talk at a conference that I have decided not to attend in person. The organizers have invited me to present electronically. This cannot be live because of constraints at the conference center, I need to record the presentation and have a video that can be played on the organizer's computer. How do I put this together?

Normally (in person) I would have my powerpoint slides projected on the screen while I give the talk. I imagine that I would record a video in which I display the slides on my computer screen while speaking, record all of it, then give the video file to the organizer to play on their computer at the conference.

As you can tell I haven't done something like this before. Maybe this is like recording a webinar to be played back later? What novice-friendly software should I be looking at to get this done in the next two days?

Response by poster: I heard from a colleague that this can be done in powerpoint itself, is that the best way to go?

Camtasia is an option I've used before (for a different purpose but with me talking over Powerpoint slides) -- they have a free trial

I know you can do sound recordings that are embedded within PowerPoint and have the slides auto play but I don’t know if video is of importance to you. I’m forgetting the exact details of including the audio but I did it last spring so it is certainly possible.

You do this with either Zoom or GoToWebinar. (I recommend Zoom). You may have to sign up for the free trial to get access to the recording features.
  • Set up a "meeting" in either of these services and record your powerpoint presentation at home, using the "share my screen" feature.
  • Both of these applications have built-in features to record this presentation straight to video as an mp4.
  • You take the resulting mp4 file, put it into Dropbox or Google Drive and send link to conference organizers.

Here’s the official Microsoft Support page on how to do this PowerPoint.

If at all possible, I would not record with a webinar platform like Zoom or GTW. Because they're designed for live audio/video, and they're recording what's being streamed rather than what's being recorded on your computer, they compress the hell out of the audio and it does not sound great. I have not done the PowerPoint direct recording but I would recommend something like that.

I would recommend Zoom recordings. I haven't found major issues with audio compression when using that to record sessions for later presentation.
