What is this children's book?

Help me remember the name of my favorite book as a child, about a dog recognizing landmarks to find his way home
My favorite book as a young child was about an absent-minded dog that got lost and had to find its way home. The first half of the book was about its adventures and the landmarks it passed, and the second half was the dog (or puppy?) having to recall the landmarks in reverse order to retrace its route. It was a picture book and possibly part of the Golden Books series. Would love to find it to be able to read it to my kids!

I remember a similar book, but it wasn't one of the Poky Little Puppy Books.
The name that popped into my head was "Spot Finds A Way" but that didn't come up as a kids' book when I searched.

Can't find a copy to see if this dog had trouble finding good way home, but could it be Harry the Dirty Dog? He notes the things he's passing on his adventures and I believe notes them in reverse on his way home, but there's also a strong bath theme.

A funny story that I didn't tell in my original post: I'd remembered the book as The Poky Little Puppy, so much so that when I found out I was pregnant, I bought a copy and saved it to read until my daughter was old enough. One day, we finally sat down to read it and...it was the wrong book! It turns out I was in the right ballpark after all! (And all of my googling hadn't turned up the sequels!)
